Biografia

Comincia nel 1960 l’avventura dei Rolling Stones, un ragazzo di nome Mick Jagger, che allora però si faceva chiamare ancora Mike, forma a Londra il suo primo gruppo, sono i Little Boy Blue & The Blue Boys, con lui ci sono l'amico e compagno di scuola Dick Taylor, e altri due ragazzi,Bob Beckwith e Alan Etherington. Sono una band amatoriale che suona nelle scuole blues, Mike è uno studente della high school, sta per compiere 18 anni e viene da una classica “buona famiglia” inglese. Dick Taylor presenta a Jagger, che nel frattempo ha incominciato a farsi chiamare Mick, che in Inghilterra suona meno “bravo ragazzo” di Mike, un nuovo musicista nonché suo amico, Keith Richards, appassionato della stessa musica sin da piccolo e loro coetaneo, Keith viveva nello stesso quartiere di Mick e i due si conoscevano fin da bambini, anche se ora sono molto diversi e Keith ha gia l’aria ribelle e maudit da vero Stones. Il gruppo allargato comincia a suonare stabilmente nel circuito dei club, ma non è ancora completo, infatti nel 1962 c'è l'aggiunta di un chitarrista, si tratta di Brian Jones.
Dopo l’ingresso di Jones i futuri Rolling Stones sono una band semiprofessionale del circuito blues, rock e jazz, e vivono assieme a Londra, decisamente non circondati dal lusso. Gli Stones riescono ad organizzare il primo concerto ufficiale, al locale Marquee di Londra. Per pubblicizzare l’evento decidono di mettere un annuncio su una rivista musicale, ma devono indicare il nome della band, che viene deciso direttamente al telefono da Brian Jones:"ci chiamiamo Rolling Stones". Gli Stones incidono un primo disco demo al Curly Clayton Sound Studio. Sono tre brani, che vengono inviati alla EMI, senza seguito. Dopo l'abbandono di Dick Taylor, e la sostituzione del batterista, che ora è Tony Chapman, arriva un nuovo bassista, che resterà negli Stones nei decenni successivi, è il già esperto Bill Wyman. Gli Stones risolvono definitivamente il problema batterista, si aggiunge al gruppo Charlie Watts, un giovane batterista jazz e blues. Con questa formazione, quella definitiva, debuttano al Crawdaddy Pub, dando a tutti l'impressione di essere ormai un gruppo di R&B professionale, sempre e comunque con un repertorio di sole cover. Gli Stones sono ormai un fenomeno di cui si parla nella nuova Londra giovane e una sera vanno ad ascoltarli gli stessi Beatles, già personaggi da numero uno in classifica. Anche gli Stones risolvono il problema manager, è Andrew Loog-Oldham, un giovane dandy della nascente Swinging London.
Dopo un primo tentativo con un finanziatore che, anche lui, trova non adeguato il cantante Mick Jagger, Loog-Oldham riesce a coinvolgere Dick Rowe, il manager della Decca che aveva rifiutato i Beatles: questa volta non sbaglia e produce il primo 45 giri degli Stones, due cover, di Chuck Berry e Muddy Waters, discreto successo, presenza nella top 100 per 4 mesi. Loog-Oldham ha l'idea vincente, gli Stones saranno l'esatto contrario dei Beatles, i Beatles piacciono ormai a tutti, gli Stones piaceranno solo ai ragazzi e non ai genitori, ovvero piaceranno ai ragazzi perché non piaceranno ai genitori, quindi saranno i primi eroi ”contro”, ma di massa, il modello di tutti i rocker maledetti che seguiranno; per un caso della sorte il 45 giri che li consegna a questa immagine è scritto proprio da Lennon e McCartney, che lo cedono al gruppo di Jagger dopo un fortuito incontro con Loog-Oldham, in quanto lo ritengono poco adatto a loro, è il brano
I Wanna Be Your Man, a dicembre è nella Top 20. Nel febbraio del 1964 esce il terzo singolo dei Stones, sempre più trasgressivi e “contro”, si tratta ancora di cover spinte sul versante rock, in questo caso Not Fade Away di Buddy Holly. Quello con l'immagine più “maledetta” è stabilmente Brian Jones, ormai leader effettivo del gruppo. Anche gli Stones arrivano al primo album, sono tutte cover del solito rock-blues, ma c’è il primo brano scritto da loro, è Tell Me, loro sono cioè Jagger e Richards, che poi scriveranno la maggior; Il disco ha un grande successo e rimane in testa alle classifiche inglesi per 11 settimane, superando anche l'album dei Beatles Meet The Beatles.
